If I knew then…

7 Oct

This morning as I was driving to work, an old song came on the radio.

You know those songs that take you back to a time of your life and make you feel like it was yesterday? This song is one of those.

So what is it? Low by Flo Rida. (what can I say…I like my rap…shorty had them applebottom jeans….)

As I was listening, I thought about how much life has changed the last few years and especially how I have changed as a person. I couldn’t help but look back to that time of my life and think “If I knew then, what I know now”….

  • I would’ve spent more time thinking about others, and less time thinking about myself
  • I would’ve appreciated what I had, instead of obsessing over what I didn’t
  • I would’ve been more thankful for my parents and everything they did for me
  • I wouldn’t have put up with a boss that talked down to me
  • I would’ve spent less money on materialistic items, and donated it instead
  • I wouldn’t have dated that a-hole
  • I would’ve drank more water, and less wine
  • I would’ve taken more cabs
  • I would’ve stood up for myself more
  • I would’ve been happier with my appearance
  • I would’ve payed better attention in my MBA classes
  • I would’ve spent more time with my friends that deserved my time, and less with those that didn’t
  • I wouldn’t have tolerated a boyfriend that didn’t take me seriously (different dude than the one above)
  • I wouldn’t have been such a slacker with my running
  • I would’ve tried to meet more people and branch out
  • I would’ve volunteered more
  • I would’ve been more accepting of people
  • I would’ve been healthier
  • I wouldn’t have wasted tears over things and people that didn’t deserve my tears
  • I would’ve said yes to a date with my now husband two and a half years sooner

And those are just a few of things I would do differently now.

But I will tell you this – I regret none of these decisions. Because without these decisions, I would not be the person I am today. I am a firm believer that our mistakes teach us lessons and make us better people. I know mine certainly have.

Today I am thankful for all that I have and the person I have become.

And while my early 20’s were awesome – please do not make me go back 🙂

P.S. I am impressed that Flo Rida could make me think so deep.

Case of the Mondays + An Awesome Weekend

24 Jun

Yesterday, I had one of “those days”.

You know that kinda day. The day when you actually consider crawling in your bed and crying….or maybe you just go right ahead and do it (no comment).

Well that was my life yesterday from 6:30am to 10:30pm.

And I still can’t really figure out why. Maybe it was sleepiness, or maybe it is because my foot is randomly hurting and I had to take a few days off running. Whatever it was, it needed to stop. And luckily when I woke up this AM, my case of the Mondays was over (poor baby, right???).

We had such an awesome weekend. Our dear friends Adam and Amber got married, and we were busy with wedding fun all weekend. The rehearsal and wedding were both absolutely gorgeous. It was also located at one of our favorite places in KC – Westside Local. Ramsey and I had our first date there 2 years ago last week, and it was fun to reminisce a bit.

Celebrating 2 years together!

My favorite part of the wedding was the ceremony. Adam and Amber’s Dads officiated the ceremony and married them!! It was so special and something I have never seen. Talk about not leaving a dry eye in the house!

So sweet!

So sweet!

Lauren and I were twinsies.

LOVED Amber's dress!!!

Another major perk of the weekend was spending time with my sister in law Sarah! She was visiting from NYC for a wedding and stayed with us a couple nights. I love it when Sarah comes to visit because we just get to hang out and be girlfriends. I lucked out with such an awesome sister in law.

Pool time with Sarah.

We also tried the new Champagne bar in KC - Ca va. So good!!

Sunday night we had a little World Cup party and cheered the US to a big…TIE!!! UGH that was a heartbreaker. All eyes on the Thursday game though – USA!

Ramsey and I also ventured on a bike ride!! And I didn't wreck the thing.

Do you ever have “those days” where you are out of it and don’t know why? How do you handle it (if you can’t go for a run..ha!)?

Hope your weekend was as fun as mine was!!

Random Ramblings

15 Nov

I had a free night, so I figured I would share some of my random thoughts and ramblings. Here we go.

WSJ

This WSJ article and associated backlash is very much entertaining me. If you didn’t see the ridiculous article written by a guy that obviously doesn’t exercise or care about himself, you should check it out. Here it is.

After you read the insanity of this article and laugh at this angry man, read some of the follow up blogs and articles. It is pretty awesome. Moral of the story – Don’t f*** with runners.

Here are my favorite rebuttals:

Lululemon

I don’t really have much of rambling to do about this topic, but I want to know what you think. Obviously the CEO (or whatever that guy’s title is) is an ass. But should we stop shopping at lululemon because of it? I actually felt semi guilty wearing my lulu clothes on my morning run….

How are you reacting to the backlash of this yahoo’s remarks? I can’t lie…I see many more Athleta purchases in my near future.

First Run Post Marathon

Today was my first post-marathon run. It has been 11 days since my race, and it felt like I ran it 2 days ago. My butt pain is STILL there. I don’t know what to do…my mind tells me to be smart and take a couple weeks off the sport. But I don’t know if my brain can handle that right now.

Another thought I had while running this morning is how in the heck people run back to back marathons. I mean, seriously. HOW DO THEY DO IT? If I could barely make it 7 miles 11 days out, how do some of these people run marathons every weekend? Are they just a different breed of people? Or do they just continue to be sore FOREVER? Please help me understand.

I could write another post completely dedicated to how much I love these dumb sparkles on photos.

I could write another post completely dedicated to how much I love these dumb sparkles on photos.

The Baby Karly

My parents have two wiener dogs, and my brother has one. As soon as Ramsey and I get married, we are getting a wiener dog. My family is obsessed with these things. But how could we not be obsessed?? These dogs are so cute.

Well, this last week has been a tad traumatizing because our “Baby Karly” had to have emergency back surgery. It has been so hard to watch this previously spunky and full of life dog look so sad and be in so much pain. But she appears to be healing well and we hope she starts walking again soon.

Have you ever had an injured pet? Did they heal back to their normal selves? Did you struggle with it like we are?

LOOK AT THAT SWEET FACE!!!!

LOOK AT THAT SWEET FACE!!!!

This is all for now.

What is on your mind? Have any thoughts to the things I discussed?

Being the best version of YOU.

13 Nov

Lately I have been thinking a lot about life – specifically living the best life possible.

Much of living the best life possible comes down to the decisions that we make on an everyday basis. We control our lives. We control our happiness. And we control changing things if we aren’t happy.

And sometimes “changing things” can mean making hard decisions.

When I talk to a friend that is sad or in a lull, I always ask them the same thing, “are you living the life that makes you the best person you can possibly be?”

Usually if I am having this conversation with them, the answer is “no”.

I have found that usually the areas we are discussing revolve around three things – Jobs, relationships and ourselves. And I always offer the same advice for each.

If you are unhappy with your job, you should look into ways you can make your job work better for you. And if your job doesn’t work for you anymore, you should think about another path you could take.

If you are unhappy with your relationships, strive to make new ones or let old ones go (I wrote about this specific item earlier this year)

If you are unhappy with yourself, do something that makes YOU happy.

Strive to live your BEST life. Strive to live a life that makes you the BEST version of yourself.

Sometimes the route to making positive changes can be extremely hard, and sometimes feel negative. Trust me, I know.

But I ask you to keep your eye on the prize. And the prize is your happiness. Which in my opinion is one of the best prizes of all 🙂

Ali

Have you ever made a hard decision because it would give you a happier life?

What advice do you tell friends or family members that are going through a hard time?

Run to the Finish Follow-up!

5 Jul

Hello to all my friends – new and old! I hope you had such a great fourth of July, and are continuing to enjoy some time off. If you are at work right now – I hope my post on Amanda’s blog will offer you a reason to avoid your work duties.

When Amanda asked me to do a Runner Spotlight on her blog, I was BEYOND honored and excited!!! Amanda and I actually worked at the same company once upon a time, and I have crazy amounts of respect (and jealousy) of her blog. She is the real deal fo sho!

At the end of Amanda’s blog, I was about to tell you my top style tips. Well, here they are and I hope you enjoy and can apply!!

Amanda’s Question:

You are Miles with Style so I would be remiss if I didn’t get some tips here too!! For the same busy ladies who are getting ready for work after those long runs what are 5 Tips to pull themselves together and look styled quickly.

1. Always try to have these 4 elements in each outfit: Texture, Pattern, Shine and Pop. Example – a skirt/pant with texture, a top with a pattern, some jewelry to sparkle and a bright colored shoe, handbag or belt. When I have the 4 elements in my outfit, I always think I look better. I have to credit ‘What Not to Wear’ for this style tip!

2. Plan the outfit the night before. It will save you time in the morning and also result in a much more put together look that incorporate the elements above!

3. Invest in staple pieces that will transition. I love solid dresses or skirts that I can wear in a number of different ways and in different seasons. I have many dresses that I will wear in the winter layered with jackets or sweaters, and can wear in the summer with flip flops and fun jewelry. My favorite places to go for these pieces are Ann Taylor, LOFT, Banana Republic, Gap and J.Crew. These places always have some kind of sale too.

4. Buy some nice jeans that FIT. Being a runner has caused my thighs to grow in size but the rest of my body to get smaller, and many jeans don’t cater to that. Last summer I went on a day long shopping excursion to find the jeans that fit me right. I finally found them at J.Crew and they are the only jeans I wear now! I have pretty much gotten rid of all my other pairs and stick with these because I feel so much better when I wear them.

5. A good hairstyle is very important. When we get up super early to run or have to fit in a 10 miler before work, we don’t have time to spend 45 minutes styling our hair! Try to get a hairstyle that you can manage and doesn’t take a lot of maintenance. Any extra minute we can get in the morning is extremely valuable. And when I have extra time in the morning, I would much rather use it stretching after my run than styling a complicated hairstyle 😉

Texture in the tank, pattern in the sweater, shine with some jewelry (I always use my jewelry as the shine!), and pop with the sweater as well! (this photo was in Napa last year and takes me back to a very happy (and tipsy) place!

I’m Back!

13 Jun

Since Boston, I have taken a little blog hiatus. Partially because I have been really busy, and partially because I didn’t know what to talk about.

Life has been really busy lately, but busy in great ways. Family, friends, work and a new home have been occupying most of my time. And after my 7 week hiatus, I am ready to add the blog back to my list of items filling my time. And in a few weeks, I will also have running back on my list of priorities.

After each of my half or full marathons, I have taken a break from running. I have a tendency to get burnt out with the sport, especially with the time training consumes. If I don’t give myself a break, I fear that I will lose my love for the sport and not enjoy it as much.

In a month, I will start training again. But until then, I will most likely be writing blog posts that aren’t as much about running, but more about life!

Here are some highlights of my life in the last few weeks:

Week in my life challenge: lessons learned

9 Apr

Hi friends!

I was really excited to hear from so many of you as I was doing my week in the life challenge.

If you missed it, basically I just documented a week of my life through photos and captions. Some posts over shared a little more than the others (ahem toenails…..). But I tried my best to take pictures of everything!

The goal of my week challenge was to identify ways that I can help myself to not feel so busy, rushed and overwhelmed. When I first began the challenge, I thought that taking photos could really help me to realize things I am doing that are wasting my time. However by the end of the week, I realized my lesson learned would be something different…

Doing this challenge helped me realize the following things:

  1. I am really busy
  2. I work a lot
  3. I workout a lot
  4. I don’t get much sleep during the week
  5. I take Lazy Sundays to a whole new level
  6. I do a lot of really fun things
  7. I have a pretty amazing life

On this list, I think the most important items are numbers 6 and 7.

By the middle of the week I knew that my “lesson learned” had nothing to do with changing how I spent my time or making more efficient decisions. Instead, my lesson learned would have to do with my actions, and controlling my feelings (especially the feeling of being overwhelmed).

One day last year, I had a routine meeting with my boss. The day of this meeting I was felt like my head was about to explode, and that I could have a major meltdown at any moment (exactly what you DO NOT want to do in front of your boss!!!). I felt like there was just not enough time to get everything done, and I was slacking on things in my work life, and my personal life.

During this meltdown, my life was extremely similar to what it is now. I was training for the NYC Marathon, head coaching Girls on the Run, working like crazy, and trying to maintain a social life. I was also trying to get the amount of sleep I thought I needed to function.

And as I was melting down, my boss gave me some advice. He told me that controlling the situation and my feelings would depend on two things. Those things were changing my perspective, and evaluating my priorities.

After he told me this, I really took the advice to heart and applied it wherever I could. Whether it be in my work life, or my personal life, I learned that this could actually apply anywhere.

On day 6 of my challenge, I had to apply this advice to my life again. If you missed this post, I was full out MELTING DOWN over feeling overwhelmed because I was struggling to fit a ton of fun things that I CHOSE to do into my day (boo hoo, huh?). I was about to ruin my Saturday by crying about things that were not things to cry about. And that is where fixing my perspective came in handy.

“Check it before you wreck it”, I thought. And that thought alone helped tremendously. I was able to get a check on things and enjoy my Saturday.

Following ‘the week in the life posts’, I’ve had people tell me that they don’t understand how I do everything, and mostly how I wake up so early. But to me, it is my only option. All of these choices I make are things I love doing. And they are the things that make my life what it is. And to get in all of the things I want to do, it means I don’t get to sleep as much as I would like during the week.

Running, family, friends, boyfriend, social life, Girls on the Run and work are my priorities. I am confident that if I did not fill my days with these things, my life would not be complete and I would be pretty bored. I would also not be nearly as happy as I am now.

And isn’t life all about filling your time with things that make you happy? 🙂

Do you have ways that you handle your stress?

Or ever have to fix your perspective or priorities?

Ali

A week in my life – day seven.

18 Mar

Day seven is the last day of the ‘week in my life’ challenge!!

I have really enjoyed writing these posts and sharing my life with you. I have also loved the feedback you have sent me. It means a lot to have so many people who read my blog and have positive things to say back to me.

Sometime this week, I plan to write a post on my blog about the things I learned during the challenge.

Now let’s talk about Sunday. Sunday is my lazy day. I love them so much. Without lazy Sundays, I would literally go crazy. By now you have seen that my life can be really crazy hectic. But that it is crazy and hectic doing some really fun things. On Sunday, I get to relax and do whatever the heck I want. I also get to prepare for the next week.

I laughed when people commented that my Monday post was insane, because I knew that eventually the Sunday post would come around and you would all get to see just how lazy I can be!

Here we go with Sunday. Thank you all SO much for following me on this little adventure.

10am - I wake up. Without an alarm. Feeling so refreshed. I did sleep 11 hours after all.

HAPPY WEEKEND!!!

And I am VERY happy that the week in my life challenge is almost over! I am laughing because you can tell that the posts and photos are getting shorter and shorter. I am losing my non stop photo taking energy 🙂

Saturday was a bumpy day. I felt like I was rushed all day, and I hate that feeling. I did have a minor panic attack during the day. More to come on that later…

Here goes Saturday…

7:15am - Out of bed, checking the weather for our run. Thinking, "I AM SO TIRED OF COLD WEATHER!!! I WANT TO RUN IN SKIRTS AGAIN!!!!!"

9:45am - Finish up with the 12 miler. It was a good run pace wise, but I was feeling not so hot during it. Just felt worn down and tired. I was also having some really bad vertigo. So bad I kept weaving...it is a side effect of some medicine I was taking).

12:15pm – Drive to Ramsey’s house to get ready for the Sporting KC game, while having an internal meltdown.

PAUSE. Yes, I was full out having a meltdown in the photo above. I was stressed to the max, feeling so rushed and just straight up overwhelmed. Then I took a moment to work on my perspective and think about why I was so stressed.

I was so stressed because I was rushing to get from a run with my friends, to breakfast with my love, followed by the Sporting KC game, then to meet friends to watch the KU game.

Boo freaking woo. I thought, “I am so stressed and about to cry because I am spending the day full of things I love doing….Why am I having a meltdown right now?!?!”

On my run today, someone said the phrase, “check it before you wreck it.” This was perfect for that very moment. I needed to check my attitude before I wrecked my day. Get over it, you are doing things all day that you are CHOOSING to do. There is no need to feel stressed and feel cranky. As soon as I realized this, I felt 1000 times better. My attitude changed and I was ready to face the day with a new, positive, attitude.

1:15pm - Head to the Sporting KC game. Ramsey noticed my meltdown status and surprised me with a glass of wine. He knows how to calm me down. Then I spilled the wine in his car (I was sipping on wine, Ramsey was driving...no worries, we has not drinking and driving!).
