A week in my life – day seven.

18 Mar

Day seven is the last day of the ‘week in my life’ challenge!!

I have really enjoyed writing these posts and sharing my life with you. I have also loved the feedback you have sent me. It means a lot to have so many people who read my blog and have positive things to say back to me.

Sometime this week, I plan to write a post on my blog about the things I learned during the challenge.

Now let’s talk about Sunday. Sunday is my lazy day. I love them so much. Without lazy Sundays, I would literally go crazy. By now you have seen that my life can be really crazy hectic. But that it is crazy and hectic doing some really fun things. On Sunday, I get to relax and do whatever the heck I want. I also get to prepare for the next week.

I laughed when people commented that my Monday post was insane, because I knew that eventually the Sunday post would come around and you would all get to see just how lazy I can be!

Here we go with Sunday. Thank you all SO much for following me on this little adventure.

10am - I wake up. Without an alarm. Feeling so refreshed. I did sleep 11 hours after all.

A post work 20 miler.

17 Mar

Two weeks ago, Diana and I ran 20 miles after work.

It sucked.

I have done a few 20 milers before work, and I thought that was crazy. But I now know that 20 miles post work is even crazier.

The main thing dictating the post work run was the St. Patrick’s Day Fun Run on Saturday morning. This is one of our favorite races in Kansas City, and we were not going to skip this race due to a silly 20 miler. Another factor was that I had an engagement party on Saturday night and figured it would be a late night out with friends. Sometimes these long runs can be really hard on my legs (I get really bad leg cramps and nerve pain) and make me so tired I can’t stay awake past 8pm.

I arrived at Diana’s around 5pm on Friday evening. I changed out of my work clothes into my favorite Target outfit and we headed out the door by 5:15pm. We decided the easiest and safest option would be to around her neighborhood. While this is easy because we know we won’t get lost, it is not easy because it can be very hilly.

The first 10 miles were all hills. Our legs were burning from a day of being on our feet and our stomachs were growling from not eating enough between lunch and the run.

At mile 10, my watch beeped “Batteries Low”. Funny I thought, because “Batteries Low” was exactly how I felt. I was tired from the week and my legs were dragging from the hills. I was also a little dehydrated from my happy hour(s) the night before. I would not suggest wine flights the night before a 20 miler.

Evidence of the wine flights. Cooper's Hawk was a blast...if you haven't gone there you should!

Lauren and I drinking our wine and laughing at the local KC Weatherman photo bombing our pic.

The sun began to set and we continued to stay focused on pounding out the miles, as well as not being hit by cars.

I am sure that everyone driving by us either thought, “You are running on Friday night? Get a life!”, or “Get off the roads you crazy women!”

At mile 15, we made a pit stop at Diana’s house to get a new watch for back up. I was shocked that mine still wasn’t dead, but we couldn’t count on it to last us the entire 20. We also couldn’t count on my RunKeeper app to tell us the correct mileage. I was shocked to see how off the distance was (it was almost a mile behind my Garmin).

The last 5 miles we stayed on flat roads and focused on getting it done. Our conversation had died down a bit, which really was due to how tired we were getting.

When the watched beeped 20, we had a mini celebration. We were so happy to be done with this run, and even happier knowing we could just have FUN the rest of the weekend.

We waddled inside Diana’s house, grabbed our drinks and laid on the floor with our legs up (btw – draining your legs is the best thing ever. If you don’t do that, you should. It really helps me with my leg cramps and nerve pains).

DONE!!! And the just like my legs, the watch never died either.

Draining our legs.

When I got home from Di’s, I was beyond exhausted. I took a warm shower, ate some eggs, then got into bed and called it a night.

Did this run suck? Yes. But am I so glad I got this run out of the way on Friday so I could have fun with friends the rest of the weekend? YES!!!

Here are some photos from the weekend, that made the crazy long run worth every since step.

Ready to run St. Pat's Day race! I'd say our time of 36 minutes was pretty impressive, especially being 13 hours post 20 miles!

A week in my life – day six.

17 Mar

HAPPY WEEKEND!!!

And I am VERY happy that the week in my life challenge is almost over! I am laughing because you can tell that the posts and photos are getting shorter and shorter. I am losing my non stop photo taking energy 🙂

Saturday was a bumpy day. I felt like I was rushed all day, and I hate that feeling. I did have a minor panic attack during the day. More to come on that later…

Here goes Saturday…

7:15am - Out of bed, checking the weather for our run. Thinking, "I AM SO TIRED OF COLD WEATHER!!! I WANT TO RUN IN SKIRTS AGAIN!!!!!"

7:50am – Arrive to my run late. Feel stressed. Get in Stacy’s car and see Diana sitting in Caden’s car seat in this bright and happy outfit. Feel happier.

9:45am - Finish up with the 12 miler. It was a good run pace wise, but I was feeling not so hot during it. Just felt worn down and tired. I was also having some really bad vertigo. So bad I kept weaving...it is a side effect of some medicine I was taking).

9:55pm - Get picked up by Ramsey from my run. Take a post run photo. Realize my numbers are backwards.

11:40am - Say "hi" to Lola!!!

12:15pm - Drive to Ramsey's house to get ready for the Sporting KC game. Try to keep myself from having a meltdown because I am so rushed and feeling overwhelmed.

12:15pm – Drive to Ramsey’s house to get ready for the Sporting KC game, while having an internal meltdown.

PAUSE. Yes, I was full out having a meltdown in the photo above. I was stressed to the max, feeling so rushed and just straight up overwhelmed. Then I took a moment to work on my perspective and think about why I was so stressed.

I was so stressed because I was rushing to get from a run with my friends, to breakfast with my love, followed by the Sporting KC game, then to meet friends to watch the KU game.

Boo freaking woo. I thought, “I am so stressed and about to cry because I am spending the day full of things I love doing….Why am I having a meltdown right now?!?!”

On my run today, someone said the phrase, “check it before you wreck it.” This was perfect for that very moment. I needed to check my attitude before I wrecked my day. Get over it, you are doing things all day that you are CHOOSING to do. There is no need to feel stressed and feel cranky. As soon as I realized this, I felt 1000 times better. My attitude changed and I was ready to face the day with a new, positive, attitude.

1:15pm - Head to the Sporting KC game. Ramsey noticed my meltdown status and surprised me with a glass of wine. He knows how to calm me down. Then I spilled the wine in his car (I was sipping on wine, Ramsey was driving...no worries, we has not drinking and driving!).

Boston Marathon Training – Week 6

26 Feb

Week 6 was an awesome week of training!

If you read last week’s post – you know I was slacking a bit due to vacation. Week 6 would be high mileage with cross training thrown in.

Recap:

  • 50 miles
  • 08:44 time
  • 5623 calories
  • 11 workouts

I completed one spin workout, and three weight lifting workouts.

Still loving spin class.

Getting it done with Jillian!

Hard workouts were both completed on the treadmill due to snowstorms and crazy cold weather.

Tuesday Tempo: Ran 5 min intervals with 2 min off from mile 1-7.5. 8 miles total, 7:48 pace.

Thursday Tempo: Ran a few miles at a harder pace. 7 miles total, 8:00 pace.

Got out in the blizzard to get my run in.

The long run this week was a tough 18 miler. We had to battle snow packed roads and chilly air. At least it was sunny and my running group could all run together.

It was one of those “shut up and run” kind of days, but we got it done!!

My favorite run of the week was Sunday. My boyfriend and I headed out for a relaxing 5 miler. The sun was shining and we had the best company. So glad to be with someone that will run with me and keep me company 🙂

My happy place.

I would anticipate this being one of my biggest weeks of training, especially for this lower key training session.

Until next time,

Boston Marathon Training – Week 5 (& Vacation Pics!)

18 Feb

WHEW another week of training is COMPLETE!

This week was a little tricky, because I went on vacation. I love to travel, and hate it when training gets in the way of enjoying my time. Therefore my policy is always to put fun first, and training second. I run when I can, and when I feel like it. And if it doesn’t happen, I don’t freak out.

That being said, I am shocked by how well I did!

  • 28 miles
  • 04:25 time
  • 3187 calories
  • 6 workouts

I started my week off Monday morning with spin and 4 miles on the treadmill. Tuesday was a 5 mile run with my friends.

Then vacation began. Oh happy day.

I started Wednesday morning with a 6 mile run along the palm tree lined roads, wearing a tank top. Wow, it was amazing.

I forgot what it felt like to run in the warm air, and I forgot how much I enjoy it (I say this now, but will surely be complaining come June, hehe)!

Thursday was an off day, and Friday was an easy run with Ramsey. Saturday was another off day.

By Sunday, I was SO ready for a longer run. I walked out the door, and decided I would run until I didn’t feel like it anymore or until I ran out of time.

I made it 10 miles before I had to get back to reality. It was a glorious, head clearing 10 miles. The perfect way to spend the last few hours of vacation.

My week was awesome, but this week I need to get serious and step up my mileage. I can’t wait to share my great week with you next Monday!

Below are some photos from my amazing trip. Enjoy!

Boston Marathon Training – Week 4

12 Feb

Week Four of training is COMPLETE! Woohoo!

This week was actually my highest mileage week of training so far, which is odd for only running 38 miles. Most of my other Boston Marathon friends are doing 60-70 mile weeks! More power to them!!

I continue to use a lower mileage approach and cross train as much as possible. Hopefully this approach will get me through Boston and allow me to have FUN while running with my friends.

Post Cross Training - Love these Activewear USA pants!

Post Cross Training – Love these Activewear USA pants!

Hard runs this week consisted of 6 miles of hills (and these are HARD hills), and a 7 mile run with 4 at a faster pace (mid 7’s). The tempo run was on the treadmill due to stormy weather. *GASP* I am starting to really like the treadmill….

Less than 67 days now!

Less than 67 days now!

Our long run was 16 miles, and although I rested up and hydrated well the night before this race, I was still struggling. I think the hardest part of it was the cold wind on our faces. At least everyone in the group was hurting on this run and it wasn’t just me 🙂

Post 16 miler and happy as could be.

Post 16 miler and happy as could be.

I continued to have healthy eating habits this week, and didn’t drink much alcohol at all! This is definitely the healthiest I have been during a training session, and I have felt great. My energy levels are up and my cravings for sweets are decreasing! WIN!

My favorite faux dessert - ricotta cheese, agave, dash of vanilla and handful of choc chips.

Today I head to Florida for vacation. I will be gone through Sunday and hope to get in some great runsplorations to share with you. I am glad my week is a “recovery week”, because who knows how much training I will get in down there!

Have a great week, everyone! And thank you for your continued support throughout my training. I really appreciate it.

Ali

Boston Marathon Training – Week 3

4 Feb

Holy cow, we are already done with 3 weeks of training! WOOHOO and a big *happy dance*!

This week it doesn’t look like my mileage was that awesome, but I did get in some good cross training.

  • 27 miles
  • 06:40 time
  • 2999 calories
  • 8 workouts

During this week. I completed 2 spin workouts, 1 body pump class, and 1 CX works (core) class. I also busted out a mile on the stairmaster.

I ate SUPER healthy too!!

I ate SUPER healthy too!!

Hard runs included hills on Tuesday, where my legs were so sore from the Monday spin/run workouts that I basically had to waddle my way up. At the end, I was nearly crawling. But since this training is low key and no stress, I didn’t even freak out like I normally would over a bad workout in training! I am really loving this approach.

Thursday morning we decided that a treadmill run was necessary since it was negative 20 (exxageration) outside and I am not tough. Stacy, Diana and I got on mills next to one another and did 6 sets of tempo with a 1 minute off. Mine looked like this:

  • 2 mins hard, one min easy
  • 2.5 mins hard, one min easy
  • 2 mins hard, one min easy
  • 2.5 mins hard, one min easy
  • 2 mins hard, one min easy
  • 3 mins hard, and cooldown

Total milege was a tad over 5, at an 8:35 pace (my tempo pace was low 7’s). Then I jumped on the stairmaster for further torture.

Following the treadmill torture.

Following the treadmill torture.

Saturday morning we did a 10 mile long run (9:11 pace), which was pretty hard. I have got to stop partying like a rock star the night before long runs. Especially this week, seeing that we have 16 miles on the schedule.

Enjoy some more pics from the week below. All can be found on Instagram, where you can follow me for all sorts of fun updates! http://instagram.com/alihat

Boston Marathon Training – Week Two (& Party Pics!)

27 Jan

Week two of Boston Marathon training went well!

I have been trying not to follow any kind of schedule in an effort to avoid burnt out. I have been running when I feel like running, and getting in my long runs as I should.

I have also been cross training a TON. Spin, body pump and the stairmaster are my new best friends. I love changing it up and trying new things. And I hope that this cross training will help with my speed and body tone.

Total miles for the week clocked in at 36, which is not too shabby when I think about the fact that I didn’t focus on running too much. Cross training workouts for the week stood at 6 total. 3 body pump classes, 1 spin class and 2 turns on the stairmaster.

  • 36 miles
  • 06:04 hours
  • 3687 calories
  • 12 workouts

This week’s long run was at the trail, and way too early following my company’s annual party. I refused to not have fun at the party and enjoy myself. So I prepared myself in advance for a tough Saturday morning run.

The theme was speakeasy, aka flapper era.

I dressed up, Ramsey did not.

Sparkles were very popular!

Rockin my fake hair. I love that stuff.

The party was a BLAST!! And I should really consider all the dancing as another workout. The people I work with are amazing!!!

6:30 am came WAY too early on Saturday morning, but I wanted to get the run done so I could go back to sleep.

I met the girls at 7:15 and we started our run. I forgot my Garmin, so I actually have no idea what our pace was or how fast we ran. And I love that. NYC training had me obsessed with pace and checking my watch, but on Saturday I got to enjoy the run and chat with my friends.

Feetsies.

Feetsies.

I hope for another successful week of marathon training the next 7 days.

And I am really excited to try some new recipes and incorporate healthier foods into my diet as well! If I come across anything good – I will share it with you!

Boston Marathon Training…It Has Begun!

21 Jan

This weekend, I ran my first official training run of my Boston Marathon training.

I will be running Boston this year with two of my incredible running buddies – Stacy and Diana. Stacy and I qualified December 2011 and Diana qualified September 2012. For Diana and I, this will be our first Boston. For Stacy, it will be her 2nd.

On Saturday morning, I met Emily, Diana and Stacy for a nice 10 mile run. We ran one of our familiar routes, and had some amazing chats during the run. Sometimes you just need to have some girlfriend time and talk to your friends about life!

We didn’t run fast for us (about a 9:40 pace), but we did have fun. And for Boston, our goal will be able to have FUN.

I won’t lie – I am not super stoked at the moment to run Boston. Of course I am excited for this amazing experience, but I am not excited about training for another marathon. My forever long training this fall has me a tad burnt out on the sport.

I love to run, but I don’t necessarily love to train. There is a huge difference between running when I want to, and running because I have to.

The Boston Marathon will be a fun race for me. And will be one I do to enjoy. No, I do not foresee PR’ing, but I do foresee having a ton of fun!

There will be many more posts to come about Boston. I look forward to sharing all of the experiences as well as ups and downs of training with you!

xoxo,

Ali

10 miles complete, with big smiles on our faces.

10 miles complete, with big smiles on our faces. Can you spy the “Boston Qualifier” sign behind us? Diana still has it in her yard. She is so proud and I love it!!!
