Run to the Finish Follow-up!

5 Jul

Hello to all my friends – new and old! I hope you had such a great fourth of July, and are continuing to enjoy some time off. If you are at work right now – I hope my post on Amanda’s blog will offer you a reason to avoid your work duties.

When Amanda asked me to do a Runner Spotlight on her blog, I was BEYOND honored and excited!!! Amanda and I actually worked at the same company once upon a time, and I have crazy amounts of respect (and jealousy) of her blog. She is the real deal fo sho!

At the end of Amanda’s blog, I was about to tell you my top style tips. Well, here they are and I hope you enjoy and can apply!!

Amanda’s Question:

You are Miles with Style so I would be remiss if I didn’t get some tips here too!! For the same busy ladies who are getting ready for work after those long runs what are 5 Tips to pull themselves together and look styled quickly.

1. Always try to have these 4 elements in each outfit: Texture, Pattern, Shine and Pop. Example – a skirt/pant with texture, a top with a pattern, some jewelry to sparkle and a bright colored shoe, handbag or belt. When I have the 4 elements in my outfit, I always think I look better. I have to credit ‘What Not to Wear’ for this style tip!

2. Plan the outfit the night before. It will save you time in the morning and also result in a much more put together look that incorporate the elements above!

3. Invest in staple pieces that will transition. I love solid dresses or skirts that I can wear in a number of different ways and in different seasons. I have many dresses that I will wear in the winter layered with jackets or sweaters, and can wear in the summer with flip flops and fun jewelry. My favorite places to go for these pieces are Ann Taylor, LOFT, Banana Republic, Gap and J.Crew. These places always have some kind of sale too.

4. Buy some nice jeans that FIT. Being a runner has caused my thighs to grow in size but the rest of my body to get smaller, and many jeans don’t cater to that. Last summer I went on a day long shopping excursion to find the jeans that fit me right. I finally found them at J.Crew and they are the only jeans I wear now! I have pretty much gotten rid of all my other pairs and stick with these because I feel so much better when I wear them.

5. A good hairstyle is very important. When we get up super early to run or have to fit in a 10 miler before work, we don’t have time to spend 45 minutes styling our hair! Try to get a hairstyle that you can manage and doesn’t take a lot of maintenance. Any extra minute we can get in the morning is extremely valuable. And when I have extra time in the morning, I would much rather use it stretching after my run than styling a complicated hairstyle 😉

Texture in the tank, pattern in the sweater, shine with some jewelry (I always use my jewelry as the shine!), and pop with the sweater as well! (this photo was in Napa last year and takes me back to a very happy (and tipsy) place!

Week in my life challenge: lessons learned

9 Apr

Hi friends!

I was really excited to hear from so many of you as I was doing my week in the life challenge.

If you missed it, basically I just documented a week of my life through photos and captions. Some posts over shared a little more than the others (ahem toenails…..). But I tried my best to take pictures of everything!

The goal of my week challenge was to identify ways that I can help myself to not feel so busy, rushed and overwhelmed. When I first began the challenge, I thought that taking photos could really help me to realize things I am doing that are wasting my time. However by the end of the week, I realized my lesson learned would be something different…

Doing this challenge helped me realize the following things:

  1. I am really busy
  2. I work a lot
  3. I workout a lot
  4. I don’t get much sleep during the week
  5. I take Lazy Sundays to a whole new level
  6. I do a lot of really fun things
  7. I have a pretty amazing life

On this list, I think the most important items are numbers 6 and 7.

By the middle of the week I knew that my “lesson learned” had nothing to do with changing how I spent my time or making more efficient decisions. Instead, my lesson learned would have to do with my actions, and controlling my feelings (especially the feeling of being overwhelmed).

One day last year, I had a routine meeting with my boss. The day of this meeting I was felt like my head was about to explode, and that I could have a major meltdown at any moment (exactly what you DO NOT want to do in front of your boss!!!). I felt like there was just not enough time to get everything done, and I was slacking on things in my work life, and my personal life.

During this meltdown, my life was extremely similar to what it is now. I was training for the NYC Marathon, head coaching Girls on the Run, working like crazy, and trying to maintain a social life. I was also trying to get the amount of sleep I thought I needed to function.

And as I was melting down, my boss gave me some advice. He told me that controlling the situation and my feelings would depend on two things. Those things were changing my perspective, and evaluating my priorities.

After he told me this, I really took the advice to heart and applied it wherever I could. Whether it be in my work life, or my personal life, I learned that this could actually apply anywhere.

On day 6 of my challenge, I had to apply this advice to my life again. If you missed this post, I was full out MELTING DOWN over feeling overwhelmed because I was struggling to fit a ton of fun things that I CHOSE to do into my day (boo hoo, huh?). I was about to ruin my Saturday by crying about things that were not things to cry about. And that is where fixing my perspective came in handy.

“Check it before you wreck it”, I thought. And that thought alone helped tremendously. I was able to get a check on things and enjoy my Saturday.

Following ‘the week in the life posts’, I’ve had people tell me that they don’t understand how I do everything, and mostly how I wake up so early. But to me, it is my only option. All of these choices I make are things I love doing. And they are the things that make my life what it is. And to get in all of the things I want to do, it means I don’t get to sleep as much as I would like during the week.

Running, family, friends, boyfriend, social life, Girls on the Run and work are my priorities. I am confident that if I did not fill my days with these things, my life would not be complete and I would be pretty bored. I would also not be nearly as happy as I am now.

And isn’t life all about filling your time with things that make you happy? 🙂

Do you have ways that you handle your stress?

Or ever have to fix your perspective or priorities?

xo,

Ali

Boston Marathon Training – Week Two (& Party Pics!)

27 Jan

Week two of Boston Marathon training went well!

I have been trying not to follow any kind of schedule in an effort to avoid burnt out. I have been running when I feel like running, and getting in my long runs as I should.

I have also been cross training a TON. Spin, body pump and the stairmaster are my new best friends. I love changing it up and trying new things. And I hope that this cross training will help with my speed and body tone.

Total miles for the week clocked in at 36, which is not too shabby when I think about the fact that I didn’t focus on running too much. Cross training workouts for the week stood at 6 total. 3 body pump classes, 1 spin class and 2 turns on the stairmaster.

  • 36 miles
  • 06:04 hours
  • 3687 calories
  • 12 workouts

This week’s long run was at the trail, and way too early following my company’s annual party. I refused to not have fun at the party and enjoy myself. So I prepared myself in advance for a tough Saturday morning run.

The theme was speakeasy, aka flapper era.

The theme was speakeasy, aka flapper era.

I dressed up, Ramsey did not.

I dressed up, Ramsey did not.

Sparkles were very popular!

Rockin my fake hair. I love that stuff.

The party was a BLAST!! And I should really consider all the dancing as another workout. The people I work with are amazing!!!

6:30 am came WAY too early on Saturday morning, but I wanted to get the run done so I could go back to sleep.

I met the girls at 7:15 and we started our run. I forgot my Garmin, so I actually have no idea what our pace was or how fast we ran. And I love that. NYC training had me obsessed with pace and checking my watch, but on Saturday I got to enjoy the run and chat with my friends.

Feetsies.

Feetsies.

I hope for another successful week of marathon training the next 7 days.

And I am really excited to try some new recipes and incorporate healthier foods into my diet as well! If I come across anything good – I will share it with you!

Marvelous Mondays – January 21st

21 Jan

Hello again! I can’t believe this is the second post of Monday! Boy am I productive!

It has been a LONG time since I did a Marvelous Monday post, and I really miss them.

For my new readers – Marvelous Monday posts are just simple little posts where I talk about things that will make my week great. It is also my way of duping myself into being excited for the long week ahead until the weekend hits!

Here we go!

I got a frother.

photo 3

I am obsessed with my frother I purchased this weekend from Bed Bath and Beyond. Now with my awesome frother, I can make awesome lattes!

I am wearing red pants.

photo 2

I got these red pants a few months ago from Gap Outlet. I never really knew how to wear them, but I think I mastered the look today.

I will mention that it is only 20 degrees outside and my feet are freezing. This outfit might be a little better for the spring, but it is still cute.

The Bachelor is on tonight.

photo 1

I am always a HUGE fan of The Bachelor, and have been watching every season since it began. I have a group that gets together each week and we watch it together!

This year to make things even more fun, I entered a Bachelor confidence pool. It is basically fantasy football for the Bachelor!!!

The DEG Holiday Party is this weekend!

My company does their holiday party in January each year, pretty much because everyone here is too busy during the actual holidays.

This year, the theme is Speak Easy. And I got an awesome dress to wear! It was on sale at White House Black Market!

And for the first time in 3 years, I will have a date at the party!!! Woohoo!!!

——————————————

Well, this sums up my week! Anything you want to share about what will make your week great??

xoxo,

Ali

P.S. If you like all these photos above, you should follow me on Instagram! I post tons of pics there that never make it to the blog or facebook 🙂 http://instagram.com/alihat/

Thankful Thursday – Feeling the Love

18 Oct

Today I am feeling very thankful for some the amazing people I have in my life.

I always feel blessed by my friends and my family, and I talk about it a lot on this blog. But one group I don’t give enough credit to are my coworkers at DEG.

The entire DEG group.

A few of the super special ones 🙂

We have a lot of fun together too 🙂

My coworkers have had the pleasure of listening to me talk about running (A LOT), listen to my ups of training, and my downs of training. Many of them are kind of enough to reach out and ask me each day how it’s going and how my inevitable early morning run went that day. Not only do these amazing people inquire about my running, but they actually care about it too.

So what prompted this sappy blog? Well, let me tell you…

Last week I was having one of these mornings where you forget things at home and have to turn around to go back (twice). It was also one of those mornings where you are flustered and not feeling 100%. When I finally made it to work grouchy and annoyed, I noticed a card sitting on my desk.

Kinda looks like me??

“Who is writing me cards?!” I thought, as I ripped it open. Then as I read the card, my frown turned upside down, and I got the biggest smile on my face.

Inside the card were encouraging words from 8 of my amazing coworkers. These words of encouragement were good luck wishes for my upcoming marathon, hand written and signed by each of them. As I read these warm wishes, I was overwhelmed with their kindness and love. Each wrote something from the heart, and something they knew would make me smile.

See if you can read any of those sweet comments. They are the BEST!

Inside this card was also a little Lululemon pouch, which I discovered had a gift card inside. They got me a gift card to my most FAVORITE running store so I could be properly outfitted for the marathon. Is that not the sweetest thing??

You know me so well!!!

To my dear friends – Lauren, Sarah, Jenn, Cara, Chandra, Whitney, Jenny, and Bethany,

I hope you understand how much your gesture meant to me. The fact that you all listen to me everyday means the world, and knowing that I have your support on race day means even more.

You are all amazing, and I cannot thank you enough. Because of you, I know I will have all the support I need to run my best race on November 4th, and I also know I will have the cutest outfit out on the dang course while doing so.

Thank you again, and I look forward to returning the favor someday soon!

XOXO,

Ali
