2012

31 Dec

2012 was a roller coaster of a year.

It started off at the bottom, and has since worked its way up to the top – with some bumps along the way.

2012 taught me many life lessons, and showed me what I am made of.

I had moments of extreme heartbreak, followed by moments of happiness that I had not ever experienced. I’ve never had a year filled with so many tears and sorrows,  yet so much happiness and so many smiles.

Among my favorite memories are my many trips. Below is a little snapshot of where I was this year.

nye

Santa Fe, Vegas, Louisville (times two!), Chicago (times two!), San Francisco & Napa, Central Coast CA, NYC, Dallas.

I look forward to seeing what 2013 brings, and pray that it is a little more stable then 2012 🙂

Thank you for your continuing support and kindness. Happy New Year!!!

Ali

Ellen’s Perfect Proposal Video

30 Nov

If you’d like a little Friday sappiness in your life, take a look at this video.

My amazing friend Ellen got engaged on Thanksgiving, and the entire thing was caught on video!!! You can even spy me in the background totally in shock, letting out quite a shrill!

Major credit to her future brother-in-law Austin, for capturing the moment and editing it so well.

Love you both, and so excited for your future!!!

xo,

Ali

P.S. I take half the credit of this proposal, because I helped set them up 😉

My NYC Trip – Through the Photos

8 Nov

Photos for you to enjoy from my NYC trip. As you can see, even though the race didn’t happen, we still had an AMAZING trip!!!

Began the trip by going to Saint Patrick’s Cathedral.

Sipped on Rose at La Grenouille (this is right before I found out the race was canceled).

Downed our race sorrows at the Lion King. Pretty great that they serve you vodka in sippy cups! And the show was fantastic!

Visited the infamous “Dangling Crane”.

Went to the race expo to pick up my race number, and 2012 NYC Marathon clothes on clearance.

Drank amazing drinks at The Plaza!

Indulged in macaroons!

Struck a pose!

Had dinner at Butter, a Lindsay Lohan and Blair Waldorf fave.

Adorably posed for pics in Central Park.

Admired the beauty hidden away in Central Park.

Explored the Met.

Educated ourselves on history.

Snuggled on the rooftop of the Met (it was COLD up there!)

Strolled along Democracy Plaza – It was pretty neat to be in NYC over the election!

Ate cheesecake for breakfast.

Walked the Highline, and spent lots of time with Ramsey’s sister Sarah (she’s a super cool NYC girl!)

Drank Bellini’s at Pastis! (I have wanted to go there for years – always saw it on Sex and the City!)

Went to our first official NBA game! AND got a behind the scenes tour of the Barclay Center!

Discussed who would win the election.

Stalked the news anchors in that little box.

And then…we went home!!!

The Unofficial NYC Marathon

7 Nov

As most everyone knows by now, the New York City Marathon did not happen last Sunday. This news was extremely disappointing for me when I heard on Friday night. In fact, I was pretty much in shock. My heart broke for myself along with all the other athletes that traveled to this race and spent many months training.

All week I understood why the race should be canceled. I knew there were people hurting and people who needed the assistance. But when Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that the race should go as planned and it would be GOOD for the city, I went ahead with my trip – as did many other runners.

As I said earlier, I understood the cancellation and also began to agree with it. My only wish with the cancellation was that it had happened earlier in the week, before so many people spent so much money to get to the city and stay in the city. I know that I would’ve gone to NYC regardless of the race being canceled, but knowing sooner could’ve saved many others time and money who would have canceled their plans.

Although the race did not take place on Sunday, I still had the opportunity to be a part of something pretty amazing. I was invited by two of my Twitter friends (Beth and Kristine) to join them for a run through Central Park. They were so kind to include me in their running group, and it turned into the most amazing experience!!

Kristine, Beth and Stephen

Kristine, Beth and the very talented jewelry designer Erica Sara!

Central Park on Sunday morning was a sea of runners, mostly wearing their orange marathon shirts. Some people even pinned their race numbers to their shirts and wore costumes (I saw Buddy the Elf!).

I would say this is the most beautiful place in the city.

As soon as you entered the park, you could feel the enthusiasm of the runners. Everyone was smiling and doing what they love to do – run. People were there spectating as they would’ve on race day, and there were even faux water stations setup for us to get a drink. There was nothing negative in the air on Sunday. In fact, I am pretty sure you got a contact runners high if you looked at all of us.

Kristine and Beth made sure I was able to run the significant miles of the race (24 – 26.2) and also run to the finish line (seriously, you girls were AMAZING!). So many people were swarming the finish. They were taking photos, chanting and cheering. The experience nearly brought tears to my eyes.

Sporting some 2012 Marathon wear that was on clearance.

Look at all those happy people!!!

Simulating my finish line hands!

The thing I realized after this experience was that even though things don’t always go our way or as planned, it doesn’t mean that we can’t make the best of it. Every runner I saw on Sunday was negatively impacted by the race being canceled as well, but that didn’t mean that they sat around sulking all weekend. They got out there and celebrated their love of running with all the others that share that same passion.

Even though the “Official” 2012 NYC Marathon will not happen, the “Unofficial” 2012 NYC Marathon was still an amazing experience. And it is an experience that I will not ever forget.

xoxo,

Ali

And yes, I will be back in 2013!

A letter to the Running Gods

21 Sep

UPDATE!!!

In case you were wondering how this turned out…check out the photo below (she needed to run under 3:45)…

…I’d say she kicked some booty!!!!! (AND she already received the news that she is in for Boston 2013!)

——————————————————————————————

Dear Running Gods,

I need to send you a little prayer, and I really need you to answer this prayer.

My running buddy and dear friend Diana will be running her 4th marathon on Sunday, and will be making her second attempt at qualifying for the Boston Marathon at Quad Cities.

Diana is amazing, and so deserving of a BQ. She has worked her butt off through training, and would have qualified last May had the Running Gods not thrown us a little curve ball (ahem, this tragic marathon experience). Diana’s determination and drive never ceases to amaze me. She is beyond dedicated to this sport, and wants her BQ so darn bad. She is also one of the best running buddies in the whole world!

Please do everything in your running power to give her fresh legs on race day, cool temperatures and the mindset she needs to break 3:45. And to the readers of my blog – I ask that you send these positive thoughts to Diana as well.

I cannot wait to share the exciting news of a BIG BQ!

xo,

Ali

YES you are! (Di and I from the KC marathon last year)

Running is My Therapy

15 Aug

So, we all have our own “issues” we deal with each and every day. Some big, some small, but they are always there (unless you are living a life of denial).

Many people see a therapist to deal with their issues. Others talk to their family and friends. For me, I handle them with a pair of Brooks running shoes, and a Garmin – out on the road, pounding on that pavement. Sometimes with friends, sometimes all alone.

People often ask me, “How do you run that much?” or “WHY do you run that much?”.

And my answer to that question is always simple and clear: “It’s my therapy. I need it to keep me sane”.

An example of how Ali feels when she does not run.

I know that I live a very wonderful life filled with joy and happiness, but sometimes I get pretty freaking overwhelmed. And my anxiety level can go through the roof.

To cope with these issues, I have learned that running is key. Running balances my life in a way that nothing else can. It brings me back down to a place that I can handle, and one that I can manage.

Running also makes me happy – just like Elle Woods stated in Legally Blonde, “Endorphins make you happy, and happy people just don’t kill their husbands” (girlfriend was majorly correct).

I bet I ran the day this photo was taken.

I need to run, I have to run. And if I am so blessed with this amazing ability to be able to run, why wouldn’t I go out and do it as much as possible??

So I must ask, are you like me and use exercise as your “therapy”? Or do you have other methods to share?

Hope your week is going well!

xoxo

What’s Your STYLE?

2 Jul

A few weeks ago, my running buddy (and amazing friend) Stacy surprised me with Miles with Style shirts. Stacy had an idea for the blog, and I loved it.

Stacy wanted to spread the word of my blog, and thought these shirts would be a great way to do so. As I had mentioned in a previous post, I received 35 Miles with Style shirts (holy cow!!!), and I have been waiting to pass them out. Well…it is now time to begin distribution. And I am excited to share my plan of action for this project.

Stacy’s idea for the shirts was for people to share their “style”. Their style could be anything from motivation, to running skirts. From happiness, to the color pink. Your “style” would be whatever you wanted it to be.

Stacy then presented me with the idea of using these shirts in a Pay it Forward way. She urged me to look to people who had a style I admired, send them a shirt, and then present them with an additional shirt to pass on to another person whom they admire. I loved this idea.

I will be sending my first 4 shirts out this week, with special notes to the recipients as to why they are receiving the fun shirts. I will also have a blog post this week with why I decided to send the shirts to these lucky recipients (so stay tuned….).

So….what is MY style??

After a month of pondering what my style would be, I have finally decided.

My style is INSPIRATION.

Since I began this blog, I have had so many people reach out to me through Twitter, Facebook, text, phone calls, etc. letting me know that I have inspired them to start running, or try to run longer than they thought they could. And every time I hear this, I feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I want to inspire others to do something they didn’t think was possible. I want to inspire others to push themselves to a limit that had never done before. And I ultimately want to inspire people to feel better about themselves all around.

My hope for this blog is to be an inspiration to others. If I can do it, and push myself to new limits – so can YOU.

I look forward to spreading the word with my shirts, and passing them along to others.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me so far, and especially to Stacy for coming up with this idea and making it possible.

xoxoxo,

Ali

P.S. Now that you know my style, what is YOUR style?!

Running in Tutus

13 Jun

Last weekend, my best friend Nicole got married. Nicole lives in California now, and was coming in town a week before her wedding. We decided that the best way to kick off her wedding week was to run a half marathon, with the goal of a PR for Nicole.

___________________________________________________________________

When I race, I am all about the outfits (umm, duh). For this race, I decided that we HAD to run in tutus. Nicole’s would be white, and mine would be purple (her bridesmaid dress colors). I made the tutus, then hand crafted some shirts, and TA DA!

Due to Nicole’s late night flight and a gala I attended on Friday evening, we did not get to bed until 1:30am. We knew the next morning would be rough, but we were ready to conquer the Hospital Hill half marathon!

Race Time

5:15 came WAY too early. Holy moly, we were exhausted. We slowly got dressed, and staggered out the door to make the trek downtown.

Once we arrived and assembled our ensembles, we walked to towards the start. Right off the bat, people were yelling at us, honking at us, and cheering at us. It was so funny!

We snapped a quick pic with an old friend, found our place in line, and began our half marathon journey side by side.

The weather was PERFECT. This race is always has a reputation of being super hot, and we got such a break this year. I will say one thing though – it was freaking hilly!!! I guess I didn’t really take the name of the race seriously. Who knew that Hospital Hill would be full of hills??

Of course she was wearing a veil.

The future Mrs. Valentine running through Valentine Rd.

It was so much fun running in these outfits because everyone was cheering for us. Seriously, everyone was. It was as if they had never seen runners in costume.

The top things we heard were:

“Oh my goodness, look at the bride! And the maid of honor too!!”
“Look at the ballerinas”
“When’s the wedding?!”
“You’re a nice maid of honor to run a half marathon with her”
“What is with the tutus?”

Nicole and I made it through the hills, and were able to finish strong and very happy.

I love this picture.

Final time: 1:50:25

So….did we get Nicole a PR? The answer is YES!!!! By 20 seconds!

So proud with our medals!

___________________________________________________________________

So what did we do the rest of the week? Well…..

We rehearsed.

We relaxed.

We partied.

We watched our girl get married.

And we celebrated.

It was the perfect week, with the perfect people.

XO,

Ali

Vegas – Through the Photos

11 May

The photos do the best part of explaining my absolutely insane Vegas Vacation. Enjoy!

Friday, April 27 – Sunday, April 29

Drinks were going down by 6:30am

Jump, Jump!!!

I took care of the girls.

My only real pool time of the weekend.

Celebrating Nicole! (Sorority life did wonders for my crafting skills)

Ready to PARTY….easily the two most responsible and well behaving girls of the evening.

10pm, the Bride arrived!!

Partying at pure. We are so chic.

Saturday – 6pm. This was the hardest drink I have ever choked down in my entire life. Notice there were zero photos from Saturday daytime. Why? Because I spent a day of vacation in bed. Yep.

But I bounced back quite nicely!

Found some of Caesar’s friends

This happened. In the lobby of the Excalibur.

Thunder from Down Under. The most entertaining hour and a half of my life. My friend – “Ali, you look like you are going to jump that guy you are sitting on”. Me – Yeah…I was..I asked him if I could rub his chest. He said yes”.

I am so jealous that Kim scored a Thunder’s belt buckle.

Bride and MOH 🙂

Dancing the night away.

Chilling with Englishman…what is with his finger under Nicole’s chin?? This picture kills me.

4am. Can you tell? Complete with dollar signs we stole from Englishman.

Last minute drinks before leaving Sin City (and after a BIG day of shopping). Dollar sign necklaces still on….

The perfect weekend. With the perfect group of girlfriends.

And no (sigh), I never went for a run.

XOXO,

Ali

Marvelous Mondays – March 12, 2012

12 Mar

Happy Monday!!!

As always, this week has a lot to look forward to….here goes….

The Bachelor

You guessed it…the first thing I am looking forward to this week is the Bachelor Finale.

As I already stated in a previous post, Ben will pick Courtney tonight. No, I do not read spoilers, but I am good at reading dumbass men.

And I cannot wait for the “After the Final Rose”, where Chris Harrison drills these two on what exactly went wrong during their 3 week courtship. This is sure to be the “Most Dramatic Season Finale Yet”!

Blogging

I have SO many things I want to blog about this week, and I cannot wait to share them all with you!!

My running has been going really well lately, and I am excited to fill you all in on my upcoming races. There are quite a few on the list…

Birthdays

Two of my dear friends are celebrating a Birthday this weekend, and I am so excited to join in on the fun with them!

After my crazy St. Patrick’s Day Race day last Saturday…I feel another St. Patrick’s Day celebration coming on!! Hope you’re ready Kara and Lindsey!!!!

Sleep

The fact that I slept at least 16 hours yesterday is making my Monday mighty marvelous. I cannot remember the last time I felt this well rested.

I love to sleep.

So what is going on this week in your life? Please share!!

Ali
