Recipe: Faux Cheesecake

17 Oct

A couple days ago I posted my favorite breakfast recipe, Overnight Oats. Today I want to share my favorite nighttime treat, Faux Cheesecake.

I first saw this recipe in the South Beach Diet cookbook. I thought it sounded so gross, but then I tried it and my mind was changed. Over the years I have adapted the Faux Cheesecake recipe, and have created one that I love.

I must put a disclaimer on this recipe. This is NOT cheesecake. This does not taste like real cheesecake. Is a big fat cookie, ice cream or cupcakes better than this Faux Cheesecake? Absolutely. BUT this is an amazing alternative to dessert if you need a quick sweet fix and you’re trying to be healthy.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4c Ricotta Cheese (I like part skim/low fat)
  • 1/2tsp honey
  • 1/2tsp Peanut Butter (use PB2 to save calories)
  • A dash of pure vanilla extract
  • A sprinkle of dark chocolate chips

Throw it all in a bowl, stir it up, and enjoy!

This recipe is roughly 200 calories, maybe a little less. The Ricotta cheese is great because it packs 14 grams of protein a serving, and it is only 60 calories a serving!

If you use PB2 instead of real peanut butter, and only a few chocolate chips, this snack would be close to 120 calories a serving. Pretty great for a bedtime snack!

Hope you enjoy!!!

My Love, Arbonne

6 Feb

I often post about my love of Arbonne on this blog. I have used a ton of Arbonne products. Skin care, nutrition, vitamins – I have tried it. And I have loved it.

Recently, I decided to become an Arbonne Consultant. With my consultant status, I can order the products myself whenever I want, and can have people order through me whenever they want! It is basically a win-win.

Below I have put together a little snapshot of my favorite Arbonne products, along with a brief description (ok, not so brief but I love this stuff so much that I could talk about it all day). As I said earlier, I have tried a ton, but wanted to narrow down my can’t-live-without products for you.

Skin Care

2-6-2013 11-39-38 AM

1. RE9 Advanced Set
I am a skincare junkie, and semi obsessed with stopping the aging process. Sure, I am only in my 20’s BUT from the research I have completed, your 20’s is when you should really start with the anti aging measures.

The RE9 set includes an anti aging serum, eye cream, facial lotion, night cream, toner and face wash. I use all of the items in the set, and love them all. I used to always use a harsh toner for acne prevention, but found that this toner does the trick and actually moisturizes my skin. The eye cream is like heaven, night cream smells amaze and face lotion has been stolen by my boyfriend numerous times (I had to buy him his own!). All items in the set are must haves, but if you want to start small I would suggest the eye cream and face lotion. You can’t go wrong with those.

2. Cellular Renewal Mask
This stuff rocks. I love the way it tingles when you put it on and gives you the feeling that you can feel it working. This product is there to smooth out fine lines, reduce pours and remove age spots (pours and age spots are my top priority).

3. Exfoliating New Cell Scrub
I have always been a big fan of face scrubs. My cheap version I prefer is the St. Ives apricot, but my splurge version is this one. I use this scrub every morning in the shower with my clarisonic brush. I love the way my skin feels afterwards. This is another item that I have had to purchase for my boyfriend.

4. Revelage Intensive Pro-Brightening Night Serum
Above I mention the removal of age spots as a top priority. Well, let’s get real. My age spots are actually acne scars. I literally have a spot on my face for every zit I’ve had.

I started using this product three weeks ago, and can already feel a difference with my skin. My skin feels SO soft and smooth right now, and I love it! The only thing I can attribute this change to is the addition of this product in my daily routine. I really should’ve taken some before/after photos to document the reduction of spots, but please take my word for it – I can see some lightening of my skin occurring. I look forward to the next few months and monitoring the process of acne spot removal.

5. Revelage Concentrated Age Spot Minimizer
This product is the sister to the product above. I use this in the morning and apply small amounts to the spots I am most concerned by.

6. BefoRE Sun Lip Saver SPF 30
Basically, this is just a really good lip balm that has SPF. Great for everyday wear, especially before heading outside for a run. People ofter forget to apply SPF to their lips, but this product will ensure you get moisture and protection.

7. Aromassentials Awaken Sea Salt Scrub
This was my first ever Arbonne product I got YEARS ago! I LOVE this stuff. My hands feel baby soft after I use it, and it smells amazing. You can use it on your entire body, or just keep it next to your sink and use it daily when you wash your hands. It is the perfect product for the dry winter months.

—–

It probably sounds like I use too many products and I am overly obsessed with skincare. Well, it might be true, BUT I know my regimen is working. Recently I went to the dermatologist and had a skin consult performed. In this consult they score your skin and compare it to other people your age. My results came up with wrinkles in the 90th percentile, pore size in the 97th percentile, and age spots in the 80th percentile. I know my plan is working, and I will continue using these items every single day.

Now let’s move on…

Health and Body

2-6-2013 12-32-24 PM

I didn’t try the health line until last year. My first experience was posted on the blog (see review here), and since that post I have been hooked on the Arbonne Fit Essentials line.

1. Fit Chews
If you follow me on Twitter or Instagram, you know that I am trying to cut the sugar. The Fit Chews are the perfect way for me to indulge in a sweet after lunch and in the afternoon at work, and not totally blow my no sugar plan. The fit chews come in 3 flavors – chocolate, caramel and lemon. I have only tried chocolate and lemon, but I hear the caramel is great too. I eat at least 2 Fit Chews a day and see them as my no sugar saving grace.

2. Protein Shake Mix
I have tried lots of protein in my day, and this is BY FAR the BEST. When I drink this, it is like a treat. Sometimes I shake it in my shaker (see item 6) with almond milk or water, and sometimes I mix it up with my smoothies. Either way, it tastes great. And with 20g of protein and 160 calories per serving, it is a great meal replacement (I drink it for breakfast). Another tip is only using one scoop with almond milk when I need a quick snack, but not an entire meal (10g protein, around 100 calories).

The protein is 100% vegan, and with the bad press on whey and soy protein, this is all I will drink. If you are interested in trying the fit line, try this product. It might seem expensive compared to other products out there, but it is actually very comparable to other high end proteins (specifically another vegan protein powder).

3. Protein Shake
This is the pre made version of the powder above. It is less than 200 calories, and still packs in 20g of vegan protein. Perfect for an on the go meal when you’re in a hurry. I actually keep a few at work for emergencies.

4. Herbal Detox Tea
I never liked tea until I drank this stuff. The flavor is light, but still packs an awesome taste. It is caffeine free, therefore you can have a cup at night. This tea is supposed to help detox your liver and kidneys…which I need sometimes due to my love of wine. I always have a box at home and a box at work.

5. Nutrition Bar
The perfect on-the-go snack or pre-workout snack. This bar packs in 9g of vegan protein, and is under 200 calories. An awesome tasty treat.

6. Shaker
This shaker is the perfect size for my protein shakes. I have other shakers, but they are just too big for the amount I drink. This shaker is small and holds my shakes perfectly. It is also cheaper than my other version – only $7 (if you pay full price)!

——

Now that I have shared all my favorites, I will tell you how to try these products too.

1. Go to the Arbonne Website: https://www.arbonne.com/international.asp

2. Select ‘Join Arbonne’: https://www.arbonne.com/registration/registrationMain.asp

There are three different options you can use to purchase items.

  1. Pay full price as a Client
  2. Sign up to be a Preferred Client for a one time (per year) $20 fee, and receive 20% off for the year
  3. Sign up to be an Independent Consultant for a one time (per year) $79 fee, and receive 35% off for the year

If you are trying out Arbonne for the first time, look into option 1 or 2. Depending on how much you purchase, option 2 could end up paying for itself on your first purchase. Option 3 is best if you’re an Arbonne lover and know it will pay you back within the year. It is also good if you are interested in building a business as a consultant. I chose 3 because I use so many products, and now I can hook my friends up with the products too.

3. Next up, enter my sponsor ID: 12837771

4. Enter the requested information and verify

5. Add or ignore the product pop up prompts, and get to shopping

6. Proceed to checkout (be sure to check the bottom of the page to see if you qualify for free items!!!!)

7. Receive and enjoy!!!

If you don’t like it, you have 45 days to return for a full refund. Policy here.

——-

If you have any questions about products, let me know (mileswithstyle@gmail.com). I love to talk about these products because I believe in them. It is important to know that I was not given anything in this post for free, or am being paid for this post. I am writing it because I love the products and want to share them with you.

Weighed Down

23 Oct

Lately, I have become a little obsessive about my weight.

I have NEVER been someone to be crazy about the number on a scale, until I read a blog post from a fellow runner, and an article in Runner’s World about the importance of “race weight”.

After I read these blogs and articles, I sat there and started reflecting over the last year. I know that I have not been watching the food and drinks that I put into my body like I should. I also now know that I currently weigh more than I ever have (even more than I did when I was in my beer drinking, pizza eating years of college). Think those two items are related? You bet they are.

So why didn’t I watch what I was eating? “Well duh! I am training for a marathon! I can eat whatever I want!”

So that thinking right there, so WRONG. And I learned that the hard way last week when I stepped on a scale for the first time in months.

When I saw the number that appeared, I about had a meltdown (ok, I did have a meltdown). Yeah, I knew it wasn’t going to be pretty, because I have noticed that my body seems a little different than it did a few years ago, and shorts don’t fit me like they used to. But I wasn’t expecting the number that appeared.

The number on that scale was 12 pounds heavier than it was when I ran my first half marathon 4 years ago (still my PR to this day – 1:34).

See those itty bitty size zero shorts?? Yeah…I can’t get into those anymore.

Now I am in a total freak out mode that I am going to ruin my chances of PR’ing the NYC marathon and running under a 3:30 because I weigh too much. Can my body carry that extra weight 26.2 miles under an 8 minute pace? Did I run my 13.1 PR of 1:34 years ago because I was so thin?

I know it isn’t smart to diet before a race, but I have been paying attention to what food I put into my mouth for the first time in a year. I have been making much smarter choices (no pizza, no fried food, nothing with gravy), and not going back for seconds. I have also cut out all alcohol except on the weekends (I used to drink a glass of wine every night). With these habits, I hope to see the number on the scale drop a few pounds before I run NYC. Which will also relieve some of my stress about the situation.

—————————————

This post is in no way asking for people to tell me, “You are so skinny, you should love yourself” blah blah blah. I know I am skinny, but I am not happy with myself relative to where I have been in the past.

The point of this post is to get feedback from other runners and athletes on their thoughts about “race weight”, how they trim down before a race, and also how they keep themselves feeling full during training (I am ALWAYS starving!).

Please share any thoughts and tips you have. I always love to hear from you all!!

xoxo,

Ali

I will make one positive comment – although I weigh the most than I ever have, I am also the happiest than I have ever been ๐Ÿ™‚

MonaVie RVL Product Review

26 Feb

A few weeks ago, my friend Bev gave me a set of MonaVie RVL products to try out.

The RVL system is all about weight management in a healthy way. It is also about a lifestyle change, and ensuring that you can fit the products into your everyday life and follow the program without any added stress. See more in depth overview here.

The RVL System

The RVL system I got to try included protein shakes, vitamins, energy bars and acai juice.

Shakes

I tried the vanilla shakes, and they were delicious. I would blend them up each morning with soy milk, frozen fruit and chia seeds.I would also mix them with water for a quick lunch at work.

One serving of the powdered shake had 180 calories, 4.5 grams fat, 27 grams carbs, 7 grams sugar, 12 grams fiber, 18 grams protein.

The shakes kept me feeling full for a few hours (which says a lot for me) and were very tasty. I was actually pretty sad when the product ran out.

Energy Bars

My mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack consisted of a RVL Nutrition Snack Bar, split in half (half in the AM, half in the PM).

The Snack Bar I tried was berry flavored. It tasted great, and I didn’t mind it at all (and you know how gross some of these bars can taste….).

The serving size is half of a bar. Each serving contains 100 calories, 3.5 grams fat, 12 grams carbs, 2 grams fiber, 9 grams sugar, 5 grams protein.

Supplements

The Dietary Supplements are to be taken twice a day. I took one at each snack time.

I only had three days worth of supplements, but I felt great when I was taking them.

Final Words

I loved the MonaVie RVL line. It was easy to add to my life, and tasted great also.

While on the RVL program, my energy levels were high and I felt amazing! I need plenty of nutrition to support my workout habits, and this line did the trick for me. I never felt like I was starving, and was never irritable because I was unfulfilled from the program (that happens to me ๐Ÿ™‚ )

I would give my stamp of approval on the MonaVie program, and suggest that you should try it too.

Have you tried MonaVie? What did you think??

P.S. Want to try MonaVie too? Comment or email me and I will hook you up with Bev!!

Arbonne Review

29 Jan

Good evening, friends!

Last week I wrote a blog post letting everyone know that I would be trying out the Arbonne Essentials line over the next 5 days.

After trying a ton of products, I have to say I was pretty dang impressed by all of them. Below is a full recap of the products I tried, and the thoughts I had on each of them. Enjoy!

Protein Shakes

Each morning, I would enjoy a protein shake on the drive to work. The pre-packaged shake mixes were great to blend up with some frozen fruit, water and chia seeds. They kept me full until lunch and tasted so good, it was like having dessert for breakfast!

The pre-made version of the protein shake was also great. It was very convenient and yummy!

The stats:
160 Calories
20 grams vegan protein
13 grams of carbs
2 grams of fiber
20 essential vitamins and minerals

Contains NO lactose, cholesterol or gluten
Contains NO Trans Fats

Daily Power Packs

Everyday at lunch, I would take a power pack.

The power pack included 5 different vitamins.Packed in these 5 vitamins were 20 essential vitamins and minerals. The women’s version also included extra calcium to keep our bones mighty strong!

Sometimes multivitamins can make me feel nauseous, but I did not ever feel this way after taking these.

I did continue to take my nightly vitamins (calcium, vitamin C and fish oil) during this regimen, and never felt a vitamin overload” from taking so many. I just felt super healthy!

Energy Fizz Tabs

I, like many others, struggle with and afternoon sweet tooth and hunger.I was hoping that these fizz tabs would help with that problem, and keep me from indulging in any junk laying around.

I received the fizz tabs in two flavors: Pomegranate and Citrus. Both flavors tasted great!

The fizz tabs for sure helped with my afternoon hunger and gave me an extra energy burst. They actually kind of reminded me of Nuun, but had a stronger flavor. These tabs tasted great, and were an awesome way to perk up your water. Plus they only had 10 calories per tab!

Fit Chews

The fit chews were another great way to handle my afternoon hunger and sweet tooth!

The chews were a tasty chocolate, and did taste like candy! It was no Kit Kat, but it was still pretty darn good!

The chews are supposed to suppress appetite, and increase metabolism. I am not sure if helped suppress my appetite, but I can say it was a tasty alternative to hitting the candy jar at work (my worst enemy).

Herbal Detox Tea

The herbal detox tea was my afternoon and evening “warm me up”.

I love having tea in the afternoon, and I was hoping that this tea would actually good. Well…it did. I am obsessed with it. And it is amazing.

The tea is supposed to help support body cleansing and liver and kidney health. I felt refreshed after drinking it, and I am already craving my next cup!

Final Thoughts

So…what did I think about the products and my week of Arbonne? Well…I LOVED it! I felt great while taking the products, and had amazing workouts all week. My energy levels were through the roof, and I looked forward to having the products everyday.

I cannot wait to get more of these products and continue to use them on a regular basis. Considering how amazing I felt after one week, I cant imagine what I would feel like after a month!

Want to try Arbonne too (and I really think you should)? Contact my friend Jessica that hooked me up with all this yummy goodness! You can contact Jessica via email: jvandenbos06@aol.com, on her website or on facebook! And be sure to tell her I sent you (maybe you can even get a deal on some stuff!).

A Week of Arbonne

22 Jan

My friend Jessica was so kind to give me a weeks worth of Arbonne products to try out and review. I will be kicking off my week of Arbonne tomorrow morning, and will be following it through Friday.

For a sneak peak of the products I get to review, please keep reading!

The protein shakes are number one on my list of products to try! I have them in these little packages, and also in a pre-made bottle. I have vanilla and chocolate to try, and with 20 g’s of protein packed in these babies, I have a feeling they will be an awesome meal replacement.

The power packs are full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

Each pack includes 5 supplements, and each one does something super special and awesome for the body.

After a week of taking these supplements, I am hoping to feel the difference in my mood and energy levels. I am also always looking for supplements that make my tummy happy, and these claim to do just that. Bring it on, power packs!

I expect these fizz tabs to get me through my afternoon lull, which hits daily at 2pm.

The fizz tabs contain antioxidants, and a blend of nutrients to give me a boost of energy (ginseng, green tea, guarana). Best part about them is the fact that they only contain 10 calories, and come in a pomegranate flavor!

The Herbal Detox Tea will serve as my mid-morning and late night boost of heat. I love drinking tea for the warmth, and this tea will also benefit my body by naturally detoxing my system.

And with no caffeine, I can enjoy it each night.

Along with these products, I also have some other exciting products to try during the week. I will shareย  all of these with you when I write my full review next Sunday. Look out for my tweets as well for a sneak preview of how I am liking these products!

Are you a fan of Arbonne? Any tips for me on how to maximize the results from the products?

Wishing you a great week ahead!

xo,

Ali

P.S. Are you intrigued enough by this post that you want to order Arbonne before I write the review? Contact Jessica at her website or on facebook!

Marvelous Mondays – January 16th

16 Jan

Wow, I cannot believe it is Monday again! It feels like I was just sitting here writing my first Marvelous Monday post!

So let’s get to it. There are some pretty exciting things going on this week, and I am mighty excited to share them with you!

The Bachelor

What shenanigans will slut-tastic Blakely and full-of-herself Courtney be up to this week?

How do they not get cold sores or Mono on this show?

"How did that taste coming out of your mouth?"

Last week was pretty great, but I will admit that I was sad to see cry baby Jenna go home. She definitely added some entertainment to the already insane show.

Pinterest Baking Project

Saturday night I made a recipe I found on Pinterest, and it was amazing. I cannot wait to share my S’mores cookies with the Bachelor girl crew tonight!

NomNomNom

New Clothes

I went shopping this weekend, and got a few new outfits!

They were having incredible deals this weekend, and the best deal of all were jeans I got from the Gap. I scored three pairs of $21! Yes, $21 total! Oh emmmm geee!

I also got this fun sweater and shirt from Limited!

Like the cameo from the Baby Karly?

Happy Nails

If these nails don’t scream, “I’m happy!”, I don’t know what does!

Arbonne-Mainia

Tonight I will be receiving a “fit kit” from Arbonne.

I have always been a fan of Arbonne skin products, but have not ever tried the diet/health products.

Look out for the review in the next few weeks! And please let me know if you have tried any of these products. I would love to chat about them and get your tips and tricks!

Fashion Friday’s – Budget Edition

I was so pleased by everyone’s positive feedback of Fashion Fridays last week, and I am really looking forward to the review I have planned this week. This week will be a much more budget-friendly review, perfect for our New Year’s money saving resolutions!

DEG Holiday Party

My company Holiday party is this Friday, and it is going to be great one! And P.S., if you are looking for a great place to work, click here and tell them Ali sent you!

Twitter Road Race

My Twitter pal Doug, @seedouglasrun, had a genius idea to hold a virtual Twitter road race! The race is this Saturday and will be a 5K. I am excited to run the virtual race with Stacy and Diana on Saturday!

I would suggest that you sign up to run the race as well! Twitter Road Race.

What do you have planned for this week?

I always love seeing your feedback and comments, so make me smile and give my comments section some lovin’!

Let’s Get Lean, GNC Lean!

11 Jan

Recently, I received a set of GNC Lean Shake products to try out. Seeing that I got back into my workout routine this week, I decided it was the perfect time to dive into the product.

Included in my product set from GNC were the following:

Lean Shake – Powder
Lean Shake – Pre-made
On-The-Go Deluxe Blender

Lean Shake – Powder

The Lean Shake powder I have is Swiss Chocolate flavored. As a choc-o-holic I was very happy that this was the flavor I was sent. I also knew that the chocolate would be a great flavor to mix fruit in.

I got out my new On-The-Go blender (see below) and started mixing. The container calls for two scoops of powder, mixed with 8oz of cold water. Total calories: 180, Total Protein: 8g, Total Fiber: 8g Total Carbs: 30g, Total Sugar: 5g.

I decided to add a little oomph to mine, so I added some frozen strawberries to my water and powder and started blending. In only about 30 seconds of blending my breakfast was ready! I poured it in a cup, and hit the road (I love that it was the perfect consistency to drink from a straw).

The shake tasted amazing! It was like having dessert for breakfast! Seriously, when the shake was gone, I got sad! Then I started looking forward to tomorrow’s breakfast so I could have another ๐Ÿ™‚

So did it ward off my hunger? Yes! I made it until lunch time (about 4 hours later) until I felt like it was time to eat again.

Lean Shake – Pre-made

The powder was so yummy, and I was very excited to try to pre-made shake for breakfast today. In my wonderful package from GNC, there was a 4-pack of pre-made Lean Shakes.

The pre-made version of the Lean Shake was Lactose Free, and had 24 vitamins and minerals! Total Calories: 170, Total Protein: 25g, Total Fiber: 3 g Total Carbs:6g, Total Sugar: 2g.

I grabbed the shake on my way out the door, and took a big drink. WOW – it was amazing.

The pre-made version was a thicker consistency than the powder/water version would be, had I not added strawberries. I liked the thicker consistency though. I also noticed that the pre-made warded off my hunger a little bit longer than the powder version did. I credit that to the additional grams of protein in this version.

On-The-Go Blender Deluxe

The item I received that I was most excited to try, was the GNC On-The-Go Blender Deluxe.

My first go at using this blender was to mix the powder shake with the frozen strawberries. I dumped my three ingredients into the blender cup, flipped it over and started blending!

As stated above, it only took about 30 seconds to completely blend the strawberries, powder and water together. I have used some blenders that took about 4 times that long, so I considered this a great success!

Final Review

Overall, I loved all the products I tried. And I am very happy that I have a month supply of the powder, 3 more pre-made shakes and my blender.

The only thing I would wish to change would be to add more protein to the powder, and reduce the carbs. It does confuse my why the pre-made version has over double the protein, and far less carbs. I would also like to add more fiber to the pre-made version. It seems that the trade-off between the powder and pre-made are related to the protein/fiber/carb content. Seeing that the pre-made version is more expensive per serving than the powder is, I will probably not use that one as much (I’m on my New Year budget).

I have always held a very good opinion of GNC products, and I will continue to do so. I look forward to *hopefully* try and review more of their products in the future!
